Some years ago I was asked to contribute to an initiative for “Dying Matters”. Run by Hospice UK, Dying Matters believes in an open culture that talks about death, and where people feel able to listen and support those who are planning for end of life, who are dying and who have been bereaved. The initiative was entitled The Art of Dying.
Along with other amateur artists I was requested to design an urn, and the chosen designs would be put on display. I named my urn “Up Up and Away” and created a cheerful, colourful design incorporating multi coloured balloons and birds ascending up into the heavens.
I was thrilled to have my design chosen, and transferred onto an actual urn. It was displayed alongside others on a plinth for the public to walk amongst and talk about at the front of the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, London.
