Kingfisher
Kingfishers are widespread, especially in central and southern England, but less common further north. They are found by still or slow flowing water such as lakes, canals and rivers in lowland areas. In winter, some individuals move to estuaries and the coast. Occasionally, if you are lucky they may visit your garden ponds if it’s a suitable size.
I’m fortunate to live by a river and love to see these small unmistakable bright blue and orange birds. As they fly rapidly over water hunting fish from their riverside perches, occasionally hovering over the water’s surface. Kingfishers are “amber “listed because they are vulnerable to hard winters and habitat degeneration brought about by pollution or bad management of watercourses.
