I am fortunate to live on the side of the mighty River Thames in an area that abounds with wild life.
For much of the 20th century, the Thames was one of the most polluted rivers in the country, but over the past 50 years, efforts to clean it up have been successful and there are now over 125 different species of fish living in it, providing food for the wonderful and surprising bird life.
This beautiful heron was happy for me to take his picture during my river walk. Getting closer to nature has quite a few physical, mental and social advantages. A study from the University of Exeter found that people living in neighbourhoods with more birds and tree cover are less likely to have depression, anxiety and stress.
