Woodpigeon

The woodpigeon is a constant visitor to my garden, and I am fond of its cooing call and clatter of wings when it flies away. It can be shy in the countryside but  is often a nuisance in towns  as it scavenges for titbits. Pigeons can be seen in art dating back to ancient times and their navigational skills make them great long-distance messengers. Pigeons’ homing talents helped shape history during the 20th century when these avians saved thousands of human lives during World Wars 1 and 11 by delivering critical secret updates.
